Consisting chiefly of correspondence between faculty and staff at Bettis Academy and members of the Southern Schools Committee of the New York Society of Friends. Correspondence concerns school needs and gifts, activities and progress reports, and building projects and repairs; and school catalogs for academic years beginning in 1939, 1942-1945, and 1947; the 1947 edition includes illustrations of unidentified students in classes, around campus, and on sports teams. Primary correspondents are Alfred Williams Nicholson, Richard Boulware, Alice Angell, Clement Biddle, J.B. Felton, Acie Hightower, Harwood Hoadley, and N.L. Bush; letter, 25 Mar. 1940, Sallie L. Topics discussed include search for an assistant or replacement for Alfred Williams Nicholson, who served as president, 1900-1945, and was succeeded by Acie Hightower. Other letters reflect the effects of World War II, including the postponement of building plans and student and staff attrition due to the draft. Also including letters of thanks from faculty and students for donations of money, clothes, and supplies; correspondence between the school's two most prominent supporters, Alice Angell and Clement Biddle, both of New York, and J.B. Felton, "State Agent for Negro Schools"; and programs from "Biddle-Angell Week," an annual event acknowledging benefactors' support of the school; and undated original map of campus and buildings, "Sketch view of Bettis Academy... by Wilson Sligh" [ca. 1940], showing locations of academic buidings, dormitories, the store, the funeral home, and the "football park"; Sligh was an African American and a native of Newberry, S.C., born in 1918.
